So you want to take charge of your financial life, instead of it being in charge of you?
And you want to do it NOW!

Okay, then let's start. The first step in the process is to set up a budget. To be most
effective, you must be honest with yourself. Sure, you know your income, and you
know your major expenses - rent/mortgage, car payment, electric bill, phone bill, etc -
but what trips most people up are the expenses that aren't so, well, obvious.


The first tip is to not expect to do a final budget at your first sitting. In fact, budgets change over time so, really,
it's something that is never finished.

But that's a good thing! Because understanding that budgets change actually makes it easier to start one, since
it doesn't have to - and never will - be perfect. That it won't be perfect, however, does not mean you don't need
to be meticulous. Being thorough is good - you just don't need to border on being obsessive. So get out a pen
and paper - or pencil, if you prefer - and let's get going! What's that, you say? Did I say pen and paper? Does
this mean we're not going to use a computer?

In a word, no.
